MENTAL HEALTH CARE FAILS DUE TO STIGMA, SHORTAGES OF CARE, AND BROKEN SYSTEMS.

Millions are left untreated as systems fall short. Primary care facilities, while ideally positioned to step in, are unable to meet these needs.

Finemind transforms mental health care in Uganda by integrating stepped care—beginning with simple interventions and escalating as needed—into primary care. Our mission is to embed mental health into routine healthcare services, enabling communities to thrive emotionally and physically.

With a successful model in Agago, we are now focusing on expanding into new districts, selecting those with strong leadership, values alignment, and a welcoming attitude towards our approach. Instead of broad coverage, we strategically deploy our model in 10 health facilities per district, allowing us to tailor interventions and build deep, meaningful relationships with each community.

OUR INNOVATION

EXPERIENCE FIRSTHAND THE EFFECTS OF FINEMIND'S EFFORTS

Finemind is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making mental health care a routine and essential part of healthcare in Uganda. Founded in 2019, Finemind addresses the urgent need for accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services in low-resource settings. With some of the world’s highest rates of untreated mental health conditions, compounded by stigma, poverty, and trauma, Uganda faces a significant care gap—one that Finemind is committed to bridging.

By training lay counselors and health workers, Finemind empowers communities to address mental health challenges in a scalable, cost-effective way.

ABOUT US

OUR MODEL

Our stepped care intervention is a simple, three-tiered approach to mental health care:

  1. Step 1: Interpersonal Counseling (IPC): Clients start with short-term counseling focused on addressing immediate emotional challenges, such as stress or relationship issues.
  2. Step 2: Problem Management Plus (PM+): For clients needing more support, PM+ offers structured, evidence-based counseling to help with depression, anxiety, and practical problem-solving.
  3. Step 3: Specialist Referral: If additional care is needed, clients are referred to mental health specialists for advanced treatment.

This model ensures each person gets the right level of care for their needs, making mental health support accessible, effective, and scalable.
